GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE 19

ON THE AIR OFF THE PRESS

Celebrity closet doors open; March is live on C-SPAN

by John DuAne

This month I'd like to start out with a heartfelt thanks to cable's C-SPAN channel for airing five uninterrupted hours of the March on Washington live. This was a very special treat for those of us who, for various reasons, were not able to be there in person. The program was notable for not having commentators wondering about what we want, or what straight people would think. People who watched C-SPAN were able to see us in all of our diversity.

Acclaimed actress-comedian Lily Tomlin, along with her long time partner Jane Wagner, came all the way out of the closet with a telephone message to emcee Robin Tyler at the March on Washington.

Lesbian comic Lea DeLaria, who was also one of the emcees, will make a return appearance on CBS' Arsenio Hall Show on May 17. A feature article on DeLaria can be found in the May 10 edition of People magazine as well as the first mainstream press report of the real sexual orientation of newly out of the closet grammy-winner Melissa Etheridge and a brief review of Rita May Brown's new novel, Venus Envy.

The May 16 edition of In The Life on Channel 25 covered the March on Wash-

ington. In case you missed this special broadcast, video tape copies are available from In The Life, 39 West 14th St, Suite 401, New York, NY 10011, for $19.95 plus $2 shipping.

Before the March, a southern gay paper,

the Sentinel, reported that Amy Sailers of the Indigo Girls came out of the closet and that the duo would be marching in Washington.

The May 3 edition of Newsweek contains an extensive article about the March and a second article on the new gay power elite. Both USA Today and the Plain Dealer should be commended for providing several days of March coverage. As usual, the May 3 U.S. News and World Report contains another anti-gay column by John Leo entitled: Gay Tolerance, Not Approval.

Unfortunately for those of us who are of African-American descent, our local African-American newspaper, the Call and Post, sought fit to print an unsigned "commentary" in its April 29 edition warning that the gay community and its demands would destroy American society. The "commentary" goes on to lament the support for the March by the NAACP and begs people to write to Lou Sheldon and join his antigay Traditional Values Coalition. A week or two earlier, a similar diatribe was run as a "news article." There was no coverage of the March in the May 6 edition of the paper.

When I spoke with the editor I learned of their staffing problems and inability to cover the March. If one of our readers could

write an article and submit it, they will consider printing it. Contact the Call and Post with your comments by calling 7917600 or write to them at P.O. Box 6237, Cleveland, OH 44101. Their fax number is 791-6568.

The April 19 edition of People magazine reported that hard-core rapper Ice-T has eliminated antigay comments from his songs in the last few years and appears at AIDS benefits. Ice-T stated "as far as gay people go, where I stand now, I'm not getting anything out of disrespecting them. That's their way of life. I really got no problem with it. I'm straight and that's it. I don't even like using the word straight now because it insinuates that they are crooked, you know?"

Randy Shilts, author of the new book: Conduct Unbecoming: Gays and Lesbians in the U.S. Military, is profiled in a fourpage article in the April 26 edition of People magazine. Shilts was notified of his HIV-positive status the day he completed

his well-known AIDS chronicle And The Band Played On.

Look for an article by Out magazine staffer Elise Harris on young lesbians entitled "Women in Love" in the March edition of Mademoiselle, still available on newsstands, and a tribute by Jewelle Gomez to the late lesbian feminist poet Audre Lorde in the May edition of Essence maga-

zine.

CBS/Fox Video has asked lesbians, gays and bisexuals to ask their neighborhood Blockbuster video stores to carry the BBC drama: Lost Language of the Cranes, a film about a man and his son coming out of the closet which aired on Channel 25 last year.

Three of Hearts, a new movie about a lesbian who hires a male prostitute to woo and then break her bisexual lover's heart, is playing at area theaters. Three of Hearts stars Kelly Lynch and Sherilynn Fenn as the star-crossed lovers and William Baldwin as the gigolo.

Holly Johnson, gay former lead singer of the now-defunct pop group Frankie Goes to Hollywood, reports that he is now HIVpositive. Said Johnson, "I've had some moments of black despair, but it's a lot worse for some people."
